In a siege, this formidable ensemble made possible to reach the cistern without leaving the safe fortified area.
Of Almohad origin, the Cisterna de San Roque is an underground water reservoir that is located at the foot of the defensive complex of the Baluarte de los Pozos. Stairs connected the intramural enclosure with the curbs of the cistern from which the water was drawn. The Cisterna de San Roque could store up to 130 m3 of water and was of vital importance for supplying the city in case of siege.
It is built in masonry and ashlars from the Roman era reused.
