Bird Watching Descripción Route especially indicated for lovers of ornithology since species such as the bustard, gray heron, common stork, bluebirds or teals nest in the area of the reservoir. The dam was built in the early 1970s and came into service in 1972 to alleviate the supply problem that the city was suffering, as it was supplied from the San Jorge and Esmeralda wells. The situation worsened due to the constant growth of the population and the gradual increase in their standard of living, which led to a considerable increase in water consumption per inhabitant. The dam (226 metres length of crest, 21.4 metres height above foundations and 20.4 Hm3 of reservoir capacity) is of the "straight plan gravity" type and has a central spillway, a lateral spillway, two bottom drains, two high intakes, two low towers and another floating one that feed the two low ones. It was raised where the river begins to fit into the Cacereña Penillanura, thus achieving the optimal relationship between the size of the dam and the volume of dammed water. In this there are meanders, so it was a very curious shape in the reservoir that, to some people, reminds the dragon that San Jorge, the patron saint of Cáceres, faced.
