
Civil architecture
It was one of the four original gates of the Roman colony "Norba Caesarina", built in the 1st century AD.
It owes its name to the fact that the road that led to Merida started from it.
It must have had a structure very similar to the Puerta del Río or Arco del Cristo, the only one that we keep from that time.
The Mérida gate was demolished in 1751, alleging that the entrance was too small for carriages.
