Construction began at the beginning of the 16th century and continued until the 18th century.
This square is presided over by the Church of San Mateo, which is one of the four oldest temples in the city. It is believed to be built over the mosque, because of its excellent location, and because of its rectangular floor plan. The first signs of its existence appear in Christian Cáceres, with the reconquest of Alfonso IX of León in 1229. It was erected and consecrated as a small monastery in which the priests lived in community. We have no certain information about the beginnings of its construction. Written documents from the 1500s appear, but we do not have much information as many were destroyed.
