The Hospital de la Piedad was built in the middle of the seventeenth century, thanks to Gabriel Gutiérrez de Prado, who left his assets in 1612 to the construction of this hospital dedicated exclusively to poor patients. Shortly after his death, the construction of the building began under the direction of Master López Periáñez, following the traditional cloister design, with offices opening onto a large, two-storey central patio with and a large granite staircase. The front of the building is in the classic Baroque style.
In 1790, King Carlos IV created the Royal Court of Extremadura, although the idea came from Carlos
III. This old hospital’s structure was chosen for the project, and the adaptation and remodelling work began. It was decided to keep the central cloister, the main staircase, and a small spiral staircase. The façade is Neoclassical in style, emphasizing the shield with the royal coat of arms.
The building now houses the Superior Court of Justice of Extremadura.
