It was the stately home of a family that founded an important estate, the first in the province and one of the oldest in Spain, hence the name of the palace.
The building depicts several construction phases: the Gothic style on the side façade and the patio, and the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries on its main façade. It features two beautiful mullioned windows with marble central posts and the family crest. Under the shield, there is an inscription that reads: “Sé tú Señor para nosotros torre de fortaleza y se renovará como la del águila, nuestra juventud” (Lord, be for us a tower of strength let our youth be restored like that of the eagle), which refers to the coat of arms of this family, half shows an eagle and half, a tower.
The façade has been reformed, as it was destroyed by a bomb that fell in the Plaza de Santa María during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.
Recommendations: It is interesting to visit the Roman archaeological remains of the palace, but you must make the reservation in advance and be accompanied by an official guide.
