The Main Square is the traditional meeting point of the people of Cáceres. This space started to be used after the Reconquista as a city market centre, being urbanized starting in the fifteenth century.
Merchants and artisans installed themselves in its arcades with fixed establishments. It was also, and continues to be, the place where the events and spectacles of the city are celebrated. On many occasions, it was used as a bullring or to hold tournaments; military parades and Holy Week processions also pass through it.
The Town Hall presides over it, built in 1869 by Ignacio María de Michelena. In it, you can see emblematic monuments like the La Hierba Tower, one of the Pulpits, and, especially, the Tower of Bujaco next to the La Paz Hermitage.
Recommendations: It is the ideal place to schedule and start the visit to the Historic Centre, and also to take a good snapshot with the word “Cáceres.”
