This Church and School complex built by the Society of Jesus in the eighteenth century, made in the Baroque style, presides over a large space in the Historic Centre.
The façade of the church has a semi-circular arch and a niche holding the image of San Francisco Javier. It is flanked by two white, square towers with pyramidal tops.
The interior is made up of a single nave with lateral chapels and dome over the crossing. The main altarpiece has Corinthian columns framing a canvas that represents the “Miracle of the Crab,” signed by the Neapolitan painter, Paolo de Matteis.
It is located in the Plaza de San Jorge, between the oldest plazas of Santa María and San Mateo. The sculpture of Saint George, patron saint of the city, presides over the plaza from a niche.
Recommendations: It is currently a museum dependent on the Bishopric, the view from its towers is outstanding. Today, the school is the headquarters of the Extremadura School of Dramatic Arts.
