The church, built in the sixteenth century, possibly on the site of an old mosque, had a very long construction process of almost three hundred years.
It is located in the plaza of the same name. In the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age, it was one of the two intramural areas around which the palaces and fortress-houses of the most important noble families were available.
Its Plateresque portal decoration stands out, with medallions of Saints Peter and Paul in the lateral ones, and above, in the centre, Saint Matthew. It is the work of Guillén Ferrant.
Inside, the main reredos, made of unpainted pine, is the work of Vicente Barbadillo, dated in 1766. The Sande chapel, now the sacristy, has a Gothic interior with a beautiful starry ribbed vault. Within the walls are the burials of the noble families of the city: Ovando, Golfines, Paredes, Saavedra, etc.
Recommendations: Do not miss the opportunity to see the magnificent clock in its tower. It is considered the oldest clock in the city, moved here from the Tower of Bujaco, because it could be heard throughout the city from the Tower of Saint Matthew when the time was right
