The Bujaco Heritage and Archaeological Site
The Bujaco Heritage and Archaeological Site comprises the following elements:
- Tower of Bujaco, which houses an interpretation centre where, by means of explanatory panels and photographs, we can see the historical development of the city from the Roman foundation to the Middle Ages. It is of Arab style, built in the 12th century, on Roman ashlars. It has a square floor plan, with two side and one front machicolations, the latter in Renaissance style, added to the tower in the 18th century. Its approximate height is 25 metres, with battlements.
- Pulpit Tower. It is from the 15th century and is the only Christian military style tower in the city walls, joined to the Mayoralgo Palace by a bridge-arch.
- Arch of the Star. Main entrance door to the monumental city, it was built in the 18th century by Manuel de Lara y Churriguera, its peculiar shape facilitated the access to the carriages.
- Roman Archaeological Remains of Mayoralgo. Located in the courtyard of the palace of the same name, they are essential for understanding the historical evolution of the city from its foundation in Roman times to the end of the Middle Ages.
- Wall. A key differentiating element of Cáceres is its wall, initially built by the Romans and reinforced by the Almohads in the 12th century.
Recommendations: From the highest part of the Tower of Bujaco there is a magnificent viewpoint from which you can see a beautiful panorama of the Monumental City and the line of wall that formed the defence.
