The Del Río (or river) Portal is the only original Roman portal that remains of the four that initially existed. It was built in the first century with large ashlars, and is made up of two Roman arches.
On the outside, the arch grants access to the stream bank, Ribera del Marco, hence the name of River Portal. Attached to the door is one of the defensive towers of the city, known as the Torre del Río.
Once you cross the arch into the Historic Centre, it grants access to the Old Jewish Quarter and the Cuesta del Marqués, one of the most picturesque streets of the Historic Centre, as well as the rest of the surroundings.
Currently, it is known as the Arch of Christ for the image of Crucified Christ in the interior niche, from the beginning of the nineteenth century.
