It is the most important church in the city
It is the most important church in the city. It was granted the category of Co-cathedral in 1957, sharing episcopal headquarters with the Cathedral of Coria.
It was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries on top of a previous structure. The portals follow the Gothic style, and in the Evangelio Portal, there is a corbelled pillar holding the Virgin. The tower is made up of three drums. In the central one, there is a medallion with a vase of lilies, a symbol of the Virgin.
The interior is rectangular with three naves, with pointed arches and ribbed crossing vaults. Its sixteenth-century reredos stands out, made of unpainted cedar and pine and dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. It was made by Roque Balduque and Guillén Ferrant. Also noteworthy is the Carvajal chapel, with a Baroque reredos showing Saint Michael the Archangel, and the Cristo Negro chapel, with an icon that is one of the most important processions of Holy Week of Cáceres.
On the outside corner, we see the sculpture of San Pedro de Alcántara, the work of the Extremaduran, Enrique Pérez Comendador. It is famous for bringing people luck if they touch his toes, hence their brightness.
The Municipal Council used to meet on the sculpted bench at the main portal.
