It has a wide variety of wildlife, including deer and wild boar.
Since 1989, it has been considered a special protection area for birds (SPA) and included in the Network of Natural Protected Areas. From Cáceres you can access it by the N-521, direction Valencia de Alcántara, 100 km away. The Sierra de San Pedro covers land in Badajoz, Villar del Rey, Alburquerque, San Vicente de Alcántara, Valencia de Alcántara, Santiago de Alcántara, Salorino, Herreruela and Aliseda. We can start the tour in Valencia de Alcántara, by the Route of the Dolmens, great granitic constructions from the Chalcolithic period that were used for the burial of the dead and their funeral trousseau.
The richness of this area is determined by the holm oak and cork oak woods that in some cases are accompanied by a dense thicket of different tree species. The abundance of cork oaks makes this area one of the largest producers of cork in Spain. Here live the Iberian imperial eagle - in danger of extinction -, the black vulture, the black stork, or the golden eagle.
