The Foundation was created to house the collection of the German gallerist, Helga de Alvear, considered one of the largest collections of international contemporary art in Spain and one of the most important in Europe.
In 2010, the first phase of the Visual Arts Centre was opened to the public. It deals with the 1910 rehabilitation and museum adaptation of the building, known as Casa Grande, a private modernist dwelling designed by the architect, Francisco de la Pezuela y Ramírez.
The renowned studio, Tuñón + Mansilla Arquitectos, has been in charge of the remodelling and expansion of the Centre with a new storey, completing this project and connecting the modern city with the Historic Centre.
In the Visual Arts Centre, the permanent collections are displayed to the public in long-term exhibitions, and the most current contemporary creations are set in curatorial programs run by some of the most renowned international curators.
Recommendations: On Saturdays, they organize children’s workshops to bring the art world closer to children.
