Cáceres is a historic city that has managed to preserve its atmosphere and monuments over the centuries. But it is also a modern city, attentive to the capacities and equality of all people.
Cáceres is constantly working to increase the degree of accessibility of both its open spaces and its buildings and monuments. For this reason, it has been awarded the 2012 Reina Sofia Prize for Universal Accessibility of Municipalities and as an Accessible Tourist Destination 2014.
Due to the topography of the city, it is difficult to guarantee total accessibility. However, there are alternative itineraries and routes for people with reduced mobility..
In relation to public spaces, the Plaza de Santa María, Plaza de San Jorge and Plaza San Mateo are accessible, bringing together urban planning and the architecture of the old walled city.
Outside it and in the surroundings of the Monumental City, it is perfectly possible to transit through the Plaza Mayor, the Paseo de Cánovas and the Parks of Calvo Sotelo, del Rodeo and del Príncipe. As for the monuments and museums of the city, little by little they are added to the list of accessible interiors for people with reduced mobility.
Informative panels - with their clear and well-structured contents – are found in the most important sites of interest. The titles are also in Braille.
In addition, both the municipal council and the city's tourist initiatives carry out adapted guided tours, itineraries that can also be done autonomously with mobile applications developed for the occasion.
Finally, the Tourist Office located in the Plaza Mayor has a magnificent typhlological model: made of walnut wood, a material resistant to handling and easy to preserve, it represents all the emblematic buildings in three dimensions and in detail.
In this sense, Cáceres has a fleet of urban buses with accessible vehicles and reserved parking spaces.
This represents a conviction so that the accessibility of the city is increasingly more autonomous and safe for all people, regardless of their physical abilities or their environment.
